Cathy Lu

Cathy Lu, in her own words: My work manipulates traditional Chinese art objects and symbols as a way to deconstruct the assumptions we have about cultural authenticity. Through creating ceramic based sculptures and large scale installations,

I explore what it means to be both Asian and American, while not being entirely accepted as either.  I grew up in Miami, Florida, as part of a Chinese-Taiwanese immigrant family amongst a community of Cuban exiles. Inspiration for my artwork is rooted in these early intercultural experiences. Unpacking how experiences of immigration, hybridity, and cultural assimilation can become part of the larger American identity is central to my process.
